About Amer Fort

Amer Fort - Jaipur's Majestic Hilltop Fort, about view

Construction began in 1592 under Raja Man Singh I and continued for years after, on a hilltop overlooking Maota Lake. Before Jaipur city was founded in 1727, Amer served as the capital of the Kachwaha rulers. Its sandstone-and-marble halls fuse Rajput craftsmanship with Mughal-era flourishes, and it remains one of Rajasthan's best-preserved forts. An evening light & sound show is held at the fort (English ~7:30 PM, Hindi ~8:00 PM, timings vary seasonally).

Tips for Visitors

  • Ask specifically to see the Sheesh Mahal - some quick tours skip it if you don't bring it up
  • Jal Mahal is right on the road up, so stop there first, not as an afterthought
  • If the elephant queue near the entrance is long, the jeep line usually moves faster and costs less
  • Go for the 9 AM opening - by noon the courtyards fill up with tour groups
